Corrosion protection by using electronic conducting polymers

protecao01.gif Corrosion is a huge technological problem, which causes an important waste of money. However, nowadays, people are not worried only with the waste of money but also with pollution problems provoked by some chemicals used in corrosion protection.

Some methods to prevent corrosion, as the use of chromates, are very dangerous to people health and related to pollution. So that, research on new methods for corrosion protection are widely developed.

Polymeric acrylic blends using electronic conducting polymers can be used for corrosion protection as intelligent films. This means that the polymeric blend can release a very passivating anion in the metal/film interface when metal dissolution is produced. In this way, the metallic cation can form another inorganic passive film with the anion release by the organic film.

The figure shows linear voltammograms for naked iron and iron protected with a film of polymeric blend in a corrosive acid chloride medium. The current density for Fe/blend electrode is several orders of magnitude smaller than the naked iron electrode showing the protective character of the acrylic conducting blend.
